Rừng mưa nhiệt đới đã và đang tiến hoá gần 200 triệu năm nay bắt đầu từ thời đại Khủng long. Lúc đó, hạn hán ghê gớm đã kết thúc và hành tinh trở nên ấm áp, ẩm ướt hơn. Mặc dù hoa chưa phát triển nhưng chúng cũng giúp cho cây có hoa thích nghi với mọi điều kiện. Khi mà loài Thông bị đổ do bão và cây có hoa đã nhanh chóng nhảy ra lấp chỗ trống. Từ đó, các loài cây có hoa trở thành cây tiên phong và phát triển mạnh mẽ, to lớn, tất nhiên chúng tạo thành rừng bao phủ khắp bề mặt trái đất.
