Thiết kế của nó, ngoài ý định để tạo ra một cái nhìn tôn giáo, nhằm mục đích cho thấy ảnh hưởng của nền văn minh Pháp và Thiên Chúa giáo khắp Sài Gòn. Tại thời điểm nó được xây dựng, thì đó là nhà thờ đẹp nhất trong các nhà thờ của thực dân Pháp. Tất cả các vật liệu được nhập khẩu trực tiếp từ Pháp như gạch đỏ của các bức tường bên ngoài, nó vẫn giữ được màu đỏ tươi sáng và sống động cho đến ngày hôm nay. Trước sự ngạc nhiên của mọi người, cấu trúc neo-Romanesque của hai tháp chuông, với chiều cao của 60.5m và 6 đồng chuông vừa được thêm vào năm 1895.
