Số liệu điều tra mẫu dùng cho nghiên cứu này được thực hiện theo phương pháp chọn mẫu ngẫu nhiên phân tầng từ ba (03) huyện trồng tiêu đen trong tỉnh Đồng Nai, bao gồm huyện Cẩm Mỹ, huyện Tân Phú và huyện Trảng Bom. Đây là 3 huyện có diện tích đất trồng cây tiêu đen lớn trong tỉnh Đồng Nai (theo bảng 3.1) và ba huyện này cũng đại diện cho 3 khu vực khác nhau về thổ nhưỡng và thuộc về 3 hướng khác nhau trong tỉnh Đồng Nai. Theo Sở Nông nghiệp và Phát triển nông thôn tỉnh Đồng Nai: Huyện Tân Phú nằm về hướng Đông – Bắc, loại đất xám pha đá ong; huyện Cẩm Mỹ nằm về hướng Tây – Nam, loại đất đỏ Bazan; huyện Trảng Bom nằm về hướng Tây – Nam, loại đất nâu pha đá ong và một phần nhỏ diện tích đất là đất đỏ Bazan pha đất cát.
