37 năm trước đây, ngày 20 tháng 9 năm 1977 Việt Nam chính thức tham gia Liên Hợp Quốc (LHQ), trở thành thành viên thứ 149 của tổ chức đa phương lớn nhất thế giới này. Sự kiện này đã mở ra một thời kỳ mới cho ngoại giao đa phương Việt Nam với những đóng góp quan trọng vào thành công của công cuộc đổi mới, xây dựng và bảo vệ Tổ quốc, góp phần nâng cao vị thế Việt Nam trên trường quốc tế mà đỉnh cao là việc Việt Nam hoàn thành xuất sắc vai trò Ủy viên không thường trực Hội đồng bảo an LHQ nhiệm kỳ 2008-2009.
