Nhìn biểu hiện bề ngoài thì kinh tế thị trường là cạnh tranh, là hình thành giá một cách tự phát theo tương quan lực lượng giữa cung (lượng hàng hóa muốn bán và giá bán) và cầu (lượng hàng hóa muốn mua và giá muốn mua) thông qua cơ chế thỏa thuận tự nguyện được hiện thực hóa bằng hợp đồng, là quyền tự do kinh doanh (tự do sản xuất, tự do mua và bán). Nhưng, bản chất của kinh tế thị trường là quan hệ hàng - tiền - hàng, hình thức được con người lựa chọn để kết nối các hoạt động mang tính tự do sản xuất, kinh doanh, tự do sáng tạo với nhau nhằm duy trì sự tồn tại xã hội về mặt kinh tế. Nói cách khác, quan hệ hàng - tiền - hàng là chất dung môi để những con người vừa duy trì được sự tự do sản xuất, kinh doanh của mình, nhờ đó chuyên môn hóa sâu hơn, vừa kết nối chặt chẽ với người khác thông qua các quan hệ trao đổi nhằm hợp tác với nhau trong mạng lưới phân công lao động xã hội ngày càng hợp lý hơn. Như vậy, kinh tế thị trường là hình thái kinh tế, trong đó lực lượng sản xuất được tự do phát triển dựa trên quá trình chuyên môn hóa ngày càng sâu sắc hơn, áp dụng tiến bộ kỹ thuật vào sản xuất ngày càng nhanh hơn nhờ con người được tự do phát triển những năng lực tiềm tàng của mình trong mối quan hệ hợp tác với nhau thông qua trao đổi hàng - tiền - hàng. Nói cách khác, những quan hệ cần thiết cho trao đổi hàng - tiền - hàng như quyền tự do kinh doanh, sự bình đẳng về mặt pháp lý giữa các bên giao dịch, chế tài bảo đảm sự thực hiện cam kết theo hợp đồng, các quy định thống nhất giữa các bên về đơn vị đo, đơn vị tiền tệ, phương thức giao dịch… là những quan hệ sản xuất phải phù hợp với yêu cầu phát triển của lực lượng sản xuất.
