Phần thu từ đầu tư của Việt Nam chủ yếu là tiền lãi của các khoản tiền gửi của người cư trú Việt Nam ở các ngân hàng nước ngoài. Tuy nhiên những khoản tiền lãi đó rất nhỏ, thậm chí còn giảm đi vì ta rút ngoại tệ về cho vay trong nước. Ngược lại, những khoản phải thanh toán ngày càng tăng lên do phải trả lãi cho các khoản nợ nước ngoài. Những khoản nợ này khá lớn, hàng năm Việt Nam phải trả lãi khoảng mấy trăm triệu USD. Thêm vào đó những khoản tiền lợi nhuận đầu tư cũng tăng lên do các dự án FDI được thực hiện dần. Tuy các khoản lãi tiền gửi có tăng lên nhưng các khoản chuyển lợi nhuận và trả lãi nợ nước ngoài tăng mạnh dẫn đến thu nhập đầu tư ngày càng bị thâm hụt.
