 Lấy cảm hứng từ việc sản xuất giấy dó truyền thống, sử dụng tre làm nguyên liệu và phát triển với kĩ thuật riêng trong nhiều năm, họa sĩ Phan Hải Bằng, giảng viên Trường Đại học Nghệ thuật Huế, đã tạo ra một chất liệu mới là Trúc Chỉ (giấy tre). Sau nhiều năm thử nghiệm, đến nay dự án nghiên cứu chế tác nghệ thuật giấy thủ công của anh đã được định danh với tư cách là một chất liệu nghệ thuật với cách thể hiện riêng, kế thừa cách làm giấy truyền thống.
