Ở nước ta báo chí cung cấp thông tin chính thống, kịp thời đáp ứng nhu cầu thông tin của người dân. Báo chí tuyên truyền quan điểm, đường lối, chủ trương của Đảng; Chính sách, pháp luật của Nhà nước, phát hiện và phản ánh tâm tư, nguyện vọng của quần chúng; những vấn đề bức xúc trong đời sống xã hội, kiên quyết đấu tranh chống tham nhũng, tiêu cực, quan liệu và suy thoái đạo đức, lối sống… Báo chí, xuất bản cũng đã góp phần giáo dục truyền thống tốt đẹp của dân tộc, truyền thống cách mạng, góp phần nâng cao dân trí, đáp ứng nhu cầu ngày càng cao, phong phú, và đa dạng về đời sống tinh thần của nhân dân.
Ngày nay, trong sự nghiệp công nghiệp hoá, hiện đại hoá, khi mà quy mô phát triển của báo chí ngày càng lớn, khả năng tác động của báo chí ngày càng mạnh, báo chí có vai trò và ý nghĩa xã hội ngày càng to lớn hơn.
