“Động lực” là từ được nhắc đến ở hầu hết mọi lĩnh vực của cuộc sống. Trong học tập, giờ đây nó trở thành một mối quan tâm lớn cho những người làm giáo dục, bởi dù cho giáo viên có dạy tốt đến đâu trong khi người học không có được động lực học tập thì mọi nỗ lực đều trở nên vô nghĩa. Vậy làm thế nào để tạo được động lực cho người học? Theo quan điểm của tác giả bài viết này, nỗ lực nên được bắt đầu từ việc tìm hiểu các cơ chế của động lực, giống như đi từ gốc rễ của vấn đề.
Động lực từ lâu được coi là nguyên nhân chính khởi nguồn cho các hành vi mang tính cá nhân. Chủ đề về động lực là chủ đề thường gây tranh cãi trong giới nghiên cứu, và đến nay, vẫn thiếu một sự đồng thuận về định nghĩa động lực. Động lực là một tập hợp các năng lượng có nguồn gốc từ cả bên trong lẫn bên ngoài của một cá nhân để bắt đầu một hành vi có liên quan có xác định hình thức, định hướng, cường độ và thời gian. Có hai điểm đáng chú ý. Thứ nhất, động lực được xác định là một tập hợp các năng lượng, tức là có thể tạo ra hoạt động của con người từ tập hợp năng lượng này. Động lực không phải là một trạng thái cố định mà là một trạng thái linh hoạt, là kết quả từ những ảnh hưởng cá nhân và những nhân tố môi trường. Lý thuyết về hệ thống cấp độ nhu cầu của Maslow cho rằng, con người có một hệ thống phân cấp nhu cầu theo cấp độ kim tự tháp từ dưới lên trên. Bắt đầu chỉ từ sinh lí, dần dần, theo sự phát triển vòng tròn của xã hội, tài năng của con người sẽ tự được thực hiện. Điểm quan trọng của lí thuyết này là Maslow cảm thấy rằng nếu các nhu cầu ở cấp thấp hơn chưa được đáp ứng, sẽ ngăn chặn con người bước lên bước tiếp theo.
Theo đó, nhu cầu được chia chia là năm tầng, bao gồm nhu cầu sinh lý, nhu cầu về an toàn, nhu cầu xã hội, nhu cầu được quý trọng và nhu cầu được thể hiện bản thân.

Nhu cầu về sinh lý (physiological needs)

Nhu cầu về sinh lý hay được gọi là nhu cầu cơ bản của con người là nhu cầu cơ bản trong cuộc sống chẳng hạn như thở, ăn , uống những điều cần thiết để đáp ứng sự sống của con người.

Nhu cầu về an toàn

Sau khi con người đạt được những điều cần ở nhu cầu sinh ly thì họ sẽ cần đến sự an toàn. Trong nhu cầu an toàn, sự an toàn , sự che chở đảm bảo để con người có thể tiếp tục phát triển các nhu cầu tiếp theo. Họ cần sự bảo vệ về vật chất và tinh thần, họ cần được đảm bảo về tính mạng của họ không bị đe dọa.

Nhu cầu về xã hội

Sau khi con người có được sự an toàn thì họ cần được mọi người yêu thương họ và biết đến sự tồn tại của họ nhiều hơn. Nhu cầu này là sự khẳng định bản thân trong xã hội, ho muốn được mọi người biết đến và tôn trọng, họ muốn được đóng góp cho cộng đồng, họ muốn được chia sẻ và được yêu.


Nhu cầu được quý trọng

Con người là một phần của xã hội,do đó họ cần được người khác thừa nhận và kính trọng, con người ở cấp độ này luôn muốn trở thành người có ích cho xã hội, họ muốn có một chỗ đứng trong cộng đồng hay tổ chức. Trong một tổ chức hay công ty, khi nhân viên đưa ra ý kiến thì ý kiến của họ phải được tôn trọng bởi những người xung quanh.

Nhu cầu khẳng định bản thân

Nhu cầu khẳng định bản thân là nhu cầu cao nhất trong tháp nhu cầu Maslow. Khi con người đã đạt đủ 4 cấp độ trên thì họ sẽ đến với cấp độ “nhu cầu tự khẳng định” này mọi điều họ đã hoàn tất nhưng khi đến với cấp độ này họ chỉ ham muốn đạt những thành tựu to lớn trong công viêc và cuộc sống. Họ muốn đạt đến những mục tiêu mà từ trước giờ họ chưa làm được để thể hiện bản thân.

Lý thuyết của McClelland cho rằng động lực của một con người xây dựngg dựa trên ba nhu cầu:
Động lực thành công : động lực thúc đẩy con người tìm kiếm thành công, tìm kiếm thành tích, đạt được những mục tiêu thực tế nhưng đầy thử thách. Những người có động lực thành công cao sẽ có mong muốn tìm kiếm các cơ hội, họ thích làm việc một mình hoặc với những người thành đạt ở mức độ cao.
