Chiến lược phát triển Dạy nghề thời kỳ 2011-2020 được Chính phủ phê duyệt tại Quyết định 630/QĐ-TTg ngày 29 tháng 5 năm 2012, xác định mục tiêu: “Đến năm 2020, chất lượng đào tạo của một số nghề đạt trình độ các nước phát triển trong khu vực ASEAN và trên thế giới...Đến năm 2015 có 26 trường cao đẳng nghề chất lượng cao. Đến năm 2020 có 40 trường chất lượng cao...Ngân sách nhà nước tập trung đầu tư cho những cơ sở dạy nghề trọng điểm, nghề trọng điểm...Chú trọng phân bố các trường chất lượng cao ở các vùng kinh tế động lực...”.
