Người lao động Việt Nam có nhiều phẩm chất tốt : chăm chỉ, thông minh, sáng tạo, linh hoạt, chưa kể, nước ta cũng có tỷ lệ dân số trẻ. Thể lực của người lao động ở nước ta vẫn còn thấp so với quốc gia khác theo trọng lượng mục, chiều cao. Do đó, khó sử dụng và hoạt động máy, thiết bị hiện đại, kích thước lớn, làm việc trong môi trường không thuận lợi (trên cao, dưới sâu…)
So với thế giới, trình độ học vấn ở đất nước chúng ta khá cao. Tuy nhiên, lao động ở vùng nông thôn, đặc biệt lao động miền núi và dân tộc thiểu số có trình độ học vấn rất thấp, tỷ lệ mù chữ cao. Kỹ năng, tay nghề của người lao động còn yếu, nhất là so với tiêu chuẩn của ngành nghề và thế giới, dẫn đến thiếu công nhân kỹ thuật đầy đủ tiêu chuẩn.
Tác phong công nghiệp chưa trở thành phổ biến, nên tính tự do, ý thức chấp hành luật pháp, kỷ luật trong lao động còn yếu...; khả năng làm việc theo nhóm, làm việc trong mội trường đa văn hóa, đa sắc tộc... còn rất hạn chế, đặc biệt là những rào cản về văn hóa, về ngôn ngữ khi có yếu tố lao động nước ngoài hoặc làm việc ở nước ngoài.
Khả năng thích ứng của người lao động còn thụ động, thiếu nhanh nhậy trong nắm bắt và tiếp cận thông tin thị trường; yếu kém về kỹ năng phỏng vấn, đàm phán và thỏa thuận; tính năng động, cơ động trong di chuyển và thay đổi việc làm không cao; khá thụ động trong ứng phó với các rủi ro xẩy ra.
