-Lũ là hiện tượng nước sông dâng ca

-Lũ là hiện tượng nước sông dâng cao trong một khoảng thời gian nhất định, sau đó giảm dần (trung tâm khí tượng thủy văn quốc gia).
-Trong mùa mưa lũ, những trận mưa từng đợt liên tiếp trên lưu vực sông, làm cho nước sông từng đợt nối tiếp nhau dâng cao, tạo ra những trận lũ trong sông suối. vào các tháng mùa mưa có các trận mưa lớn, cường độ mạnh, nước mưa tích lũy nhanh, nếu đất tại chỗ đã no nước thì nước mưa đổ cả vào dòng chảy, dễ gây ra lũ, khi lũ lớn, nước lũ tràn qua bờ sông, chảy vào những chỗ trũng và gây ra ngập lụt trên diện rộng.
b.Tình trạng lũ lụt ở ĐBSCL:
-Hàng năm, đbscl có khoảng 1.4 triệu ha bị ngập lụt vào năm lũ nhỏ và khoảng 1.9 triệu ha vào năm lũ lớn, thời gian ngập lụt từ 3-6 tháng, muộn hơn so với thượng lưu khoảng 1 tháng.
-Lũ đbscl mỗi ngày lên trung bình 5-7cm/ngày, lúc cao nhất 20-30cm/ngày. đỉnh lũ lớn nhất thường xẩy ra vào cuối tháng 9, đầu tháng 10.
-Tổng lưu lượng lũ trung bình toàn vùng đbscl khoảng 38.000m3/s. những năm lũ lớn 40.000-45.000m3/s. tổng lượng lũ vào đbscl khoảng 350-400 tỷ m3.
-Lũ ở đbscl có thể chia làm 3 thời kỳ:
+Đầu mùa lũ (từ tháng 7-8): nước lũ trên sông chính lên mạnh, nước lũ chứa nhiều phù sa.
+Thời kỳ thứ 2 là khi nước lũ đã lên cao, lũ vào theo 2 hướng là từ sông chính vào và từ biên giới việt nam- campuchia tràn xuống đồng tháp mười và tứ giác long xuyên.
+Thời kỳ thứ 3 là thời kỳ lũ rút, thường bắt đầu vào hạ tuần tháng 10, mức nước lũ ĐBSCL xuống dần cho đến tháng 12 thì đại bộ phận diện tích hết ngập lụt.
