1, Đại từ nhân xưng “Nẫu”
Phú Yên – Bình Định hay “Xứ Nẫu” là một, bởi vì khi nói đến con người Phú Yên và Bình Định người ta nghĩ ngay đến người dân xứ Nẫu. Vậy Nẫu ở đây là gì? Tại sao lại có từ Nẫu trong phương ngữ Phú Yên và Bình Định?
Theo tác giả Phan Thanh Bính: Năm 1578, chúa Nguyễn Hoàng cử Phù Nghĩa hầu Lương Văn Chánh làm Trấn biên quan có bổn phận đưa lưu dân nghèo không sản nghiệp khai khẩn vùng đất mới từ nam đèo Cù Mông đến đèo Cả (tỉnh Phú yên bây giờ). Sau 33 năm khai phá vùng đất mới, hình thành làng mạc, năm 1611 chúa Nguyễn Hoàng thành lập phủ Phú Yên gồm hai huyện Đồng Xuân và Tuy Hòa. Năm 1629, chúa Nguyễn Phúc Nguyên nâng cấp phủ Phú Yên thành dinh Trấn Biên. Do đặc điểm của vùng đất mới còn hoang hóa, dân cư thưa thớt nên các đơn vị hành chính của vùng biên viễn có những nét đặc thù. Dưới cấp huyện có cấp Thuộc, dưới Thuộc là các đơn vị hành chính nhỏ hơn như Phường, Nậu, Man. Phường là các làng nghề có quy mô như phường Lụa, phường Sông Nhiễu. Nậu là tổ chức quản lý một nhóm nhỏ cùng làm một nghề, người đứng đầu gọi là đầu Nậu.
Ví dụ: “Nậu nguồn” chỉ nhóm người khai thác rừng, “Nậu nại” chỉ nhóm người làm muối, “Nậu rổi” chỉ nhóm người bán cá, “Nậu rớ” chỉ nhóm người đánh cá bằng rớ vùng nước lợ, “Nậu cấy” chỉ nhóm người đi cấy mướn, “Nậu vựa” chỉ nhóm người làm mắm…

Các đơn vị hành chính như “Thuộc”, “Nậu” bị xóa bỏ. Khái niệm thành tố chung cấp hành chính “Nậu” được biến nghĩa dùng để gọi người đứng đầu trong đám người nào đó và sau này dùng để gọi đại từ nhân xưng ngôi thứ ba.
Từ chữ “Nậu” ban đầu, phương ngữ Phú Yên – Bình Định tỉnh lược đại từ danh xưng ngôi thứ ba (cả số ít và số nhiều) bằng cách thay từ gốc thanh hỏi. Ví dụ: Ông ấy, bà ấy được thay bằng: “ổng”, “bả”.
