Phương pháp phân loại lý thuyết: là phương pháp sắp xếp các tài liệu khoa học thành hệ thống logic chặt chẽ theo từng mặt, từng đơn vị kiến thức, từng vấn đề khoa học có cùng dấu hiệu bản chất, có cùng hướng phát triển để dễ nhận biết, dễ sử dụng theo mục đích nghiên cứu, giúp phát hiện các quy luật phát triển của đối tượng, sự phát triển của kiến thức khoa học để từ đó dự đoán được các xu hướng phát triển mới của khoa học và thực tiễn.
Phương pháp hệ thống hóa lý thuyết: là phương pháp sắp xếp những thông tin đa dạng thu thập được từ các nguồn, các tài liệu khác nhau thành một hệ thống với một kết cấu chặt chẽ (theo quan điểm hệ thống – cấu trúc của việc xây dựng một mô hình lý thuyết trong nghiên cứu khoa học) để từ đó mà xây dựng một lý thuyết mới hoàn chỉnh giúp hiểu biết đối tượng được đầy đủ và sâu sắc hơn.
Phân loại và hệ thống hóa là hai phương pháp đi liền với nhau. Trong phân loại đã có yếu tố hệ thống hóa. Hệ thống hóa phải dựa trên cơ sở phân loại và hệ thống hóa làm cho phân loại được hợp lý và chính xác hơn.
