Quy mô nợ công

Theo The Economist Intelligence Unit, nợ công của Việt Nam năm 2001 mới là 11,5 tỷ USD, tương đương 36% GDP, bình quân mỗi người gánh số nợ công xấp xỉ 144 USD. Nhưng tính đến hết năm 2010, nợ công đã tăng lên 55,2 tỷ USD, tương đương 54,3% GDP và hiện tại, Việt Nam được xếp vào nhóm nước có mức nợ công trên trung bình. Như vậy, trong vòng 10 năm từ 2001 đến nay, quy mô nợ công đã tăng gấp gần 5 lần với tốc độ tăng trưởng nợ trên 15% mỗi năm (Biểu đồ 1). Nếu tiếp tục với tốc độ này thì chỉ trong vòng 5 năm nữa, đến năm 2016, nợ công của Việt Nam sẽ vượt quá 100% GDP như hai nước thành viên EU mới lâm vào khủng hoảng nợ công gần đây là Hy Lạp (133,6%), Ailen (129,2%). Nợ công đạt trên 100% GDP là một con số không nhỏ đối với một nền kinh tế đang phát triển và quy mô nhỏ, phụ thuộc nhiều vào xuất khẩu sản phẩm nông nghiệp thô và công nghiệp nhẹ như Việt Nam.

Public debt reached over 100% of GDP is a figure not small for a growing economy and small scale, heavily dependent on exports of raw agricultural products and light industry such as Vietnam.
