Tổng sản phẩm trong nước (GDP) năm 2008 theo giá so sánh 1994 ước tính tăng 6,23% so với năm 2007, trong đó khu vực nông, lâm nghiệp và thuỷ sản tăng 3,79%; khu vực công nghiệp và xây dựng tăng 6,33%; khu vực dịch vụ tăng 7,2%. Trong 6,23% tăng trưởng chung của nền kinh tế, khu vực nông, lâm nghiệp và thuỷ sản đóng góp 0,68 điểm phần trăm; công nghiệp, xây dựng đóng góp 2,65 điểm phần trăm và dịch vụ đóng góp 2,9 điểm phần trăm. Tốc độ tăng tổng sản phẩm trong nước năm 2008 tuy thấp hơn tốc độ tăng 8,48% của năm 2007 và mục tiêu kế hoạch điều chỉnh là tăng 7,0%, nhưng trong bối cảnh tài chính thế giới khủng hoảng, kinh tế của nhiều nước suy giảm mà nền kinh tế nước ta vẫn đạt tốc độ tăng tương đối cao như trên là một cố gắng rất lớn.
