Theo định nghĩa của liên đoàn kế toán quốc tế “ Kiểm toán là việc kiểm toán viên độc lập kiểm tra và trình bày ý kiến của mình về Báo cáo tài chính”. Theo định nghĩa này đối tượng kiểm toán là báo cáo tài chính, nội dung là kiểm tra và bày tỏ quan điểm, người thực hiện là kiểm toán viên độc lập.
