Cùng với danh từ, động từ là hai thực từ cơ bản nhất trong hệ thống từ loại
tiếng Việt cũng như tiếng Anh. Đồng thời, động từ được coi là vị từ hoàn chỉnh
về nội dung và cấu trúc để tạo nên câu trọn vẹn, đầy đủ hai thành phần chủ ngữ
và vị ngữ.
Trong hệ thống từ vựng tiếng Việt và tiếng Anh, động từ chiếm số lượng
lớn, được sử dụng với tần số rất cao trong đời sống sinh hoạt hàng ngày bởi nó
gắn liền với các hoạt động, trạng thái, cảm xúc của con người. Ăn được coi là
một động từ tiêu biểu như vậy, vì nó được xếp vào nhóm từ chỉ hoạt động của
con người. Đây được coi là hoạt động chủ đạo của con người, có ý nghĩa quan
trọng và quyết định sự tồn tại của con người.
