Bởi vì phương pháp giáo dục, đào tạo ở Mỹ đòi hỏi sinh viên phải phát huy một cách tối đa tính tự giác. Điều này được thể hiện qua việc tự học và tự nghiên cứu. Ngoài giờ lên lớp, sinh viên thường phải hoàn thành một số lượng lớn các bài tập về nhà (problem sets), bài đọc (reading assignment), bài viết (papers). Chuyện vào thư viện, lên internet tìm hiểu thông tin để viết bài, đọc những tài liệu tham khảo khá dài là chuyện “như cơm bữa”. Thư viện ở nhiều trường đại học lớn còn mở cửa 24/24 giờ để đáp ứng nhu cầu học của sinh viên. Đối với sinh viên Việt Nam mình, học tập lại càng đòi hỏi phải nỗ lực nhiều hơn để cạnh tranh được với sv Mỹ. Lý do thứ nhất, học tập bằng tiếng Anh là một thách thức không nhỏ. Bạn nên nhớ một điều rằng tiếng Anh, nhất là khả năng diễn đạt và khả năng viết vô cùng quan trọng, đặc biệt với các sinh viên theo học các ngành xã hội.
