Đèo Hải Vân được tờ Guardian bình chọn trong Top 10 cung đường ngoạn mục và cuốn hút nhất thế giới.
Đèo Hải Vân nằm trên một nhánh núi đâm ra biển thuộc dãy Bạch Mã (một phần của dãy Trường Sơn), nối liền địa phận tỉnh Thừa Thiên Huế và thành phố Đà Nẵng. Đèo cao 500m so với mực nước biển và dài khoảng 20km. Gọi là “Hải Vân” vì nơi đây có cảnh sắc vô cùng tuyệt đẹp, đỉnh đèo quanh năm có mây che phủ và chân đèo là biển mênh mông xanh thẳm. Theo sử liệu, đèo Hải Vân xưa kia là ranh giới giữa Đại Việt và Chiêm Thành. Một thế kỷ sau, nhà Hồ đem quân sang đánh Chiêm Thành, vua Chiêm Thành phải cắt đất để cầu hòa. Từ đó, Hải Vân thuộc về Đại Ngu (Việt Nam ngày nay). Trong sách Phủ Biên tạp lục, Lê Quý Đôn đã ghi: "Hải Vân dưới sát bờ biển, trên chọc từng mây là giới hạn của hai xứ Thuận Hóa và Quảng Nam". Trong nhiều thế kỷ, đường đèo Hải Vân rất ít người qua lại vì sự nguy hiểm, cướp bóc, thú dữ… ở nơi đây. Thời Việt Nam Cộng Hòa, người ta lập 3 trạm kiểm soát để điều hành giao thông trên đường đèo nhằm hạn chế tai nạn. Năm 1966, Quân đội Hoa Kỳ đã mở rộng và nâng cấp đường đèo. Ngày 5/6/2005, tuyến hầm đường bộ xuyên đèo Hải Vân chính thức được đưa vào sử dụng, tạo điều kiện thuận lợi và an toàn khi di chuyển qua đây.
Đèo Hải Vân khiến bất cứ ai cũng phải trầm trồ, nghiêng mình trước vẻ đẹp hùng vĩ nên thơ của nó. Hải Vân thật xứng với mỹ danh: “Thiên hạ đệ nhất hùng quan” mà tương truyền vua Lê Thánh Tông đã phong tặng nhân một lần du ngoạn trên đỉnh đèo (năm 1470).
Hiện nay có hai con đường qua đèo Hải Vân: hầm đường bộ xuyên đèo Hải Vân và đường đèo Hải Vân.

Hải Vân Quan hay còn gọi là cửa ải Hải Vân, nằm trên đỉnh đèo Hải Vân. Nếu bạn đã chinh phục những cung đường ngoạn mục của đèo Hải Vân thì đừng quên ghé thăm Hải Vân Quan.

Hiện nay, các di tích này đang bị xuống cấp trầm trọng.
