VDI Guideline 2222 [1,192, 1,193] defines an approach and individual methods forthe conceptual design of technical products and is therefore particularly suitablefor the development of new products. Themore recent VDI Guideline 2221 [1,191](English translation: [1.186]) proposes a generic approach to the design of technicalsystems and products, emphasising the general applicability of the approachin the fields of mechanical, precision, control, software and process engineering.The approach (see Figure 1.9) includes seven basic working steps that accord withthe fundamentals of technical systems (see Section 2.1) and company strategy(see Chapter 4). Both guidelines have been developed by a VDI Committee comprisingsenior designers from industry and many of the previously mentioneddesign methodologists from the former West Germany. Because the aim is forgeneral applicability, the design process has been only roughly structured, thusproduct-specific and company-specific variations. Figure 1.9 shouldshould be regarded as a guideline to which detailed working procedures canbe assigned. Special emphasis is placed on the iterative nature of the approachand the sequence of the steps must not be considered rigid. Some steps mightbe omitted, and others repeatedly.
