Tridymite is a mineral silica (SiO2), which is not only precious to collectors but also useful in scientific analyses. The crystals of this rare and unique mineral are typically microscopic and very thin, with the largest having a length of 1 cm. An aggregate of tridymite Ettringer Bellerberg in the Eifel Mountains from is shown here with 2.5 mm image width. These crystals provide key insights into the formation of crystals and their evolution in different environments. Tridymite is also artificially manufactured to fabricate refractory ceramics for use as linings in equipment, including blast furnaces, open-hearth furnaces, and hot stoves utilized in smelting to create industrial metals.
