Học là một hoạt động không thể thiếu đối với tất cả mọi người từ khi sinh ra cho đến suốt cuộc đời. Mỗi người muốn tồn tại phát triển và thích ứng được với Xã Hội thì cần phải học tập ở mọi hình thức bởi cuộc sống luôn vận động và phát triển không ngừng .Lê nin từng nói: “Học, học nữa, học mãi”. Câu nói đó luôn có giá trị ở mọi thời đại, đặc biệt trong xã hội ngày nay đang hướng tới nền kinh tế tri thức, nó đòi hỏi mọi người phải vận động để theo kịp sự phát triển của xã hội. Chính vì vậy mà tinh thần tự học có vai trò vô cùng quan trọng .

Học là thu nhận kiến thức từ người khác truyền lại, rèn luyện thành kỹ năng, nhận thức: Học ở trên lớp, học ở trường, học thầy, học bạn… Nếu học là quá trình tìm hiểu , thu nhận kiến thức và hình thành kỹ năng của bản thân thì tự học là sự chủ động , tích cực , độc lập tìm hiểu , lĩnh hội tri thức và hình thành kỹ năng cho mình. Tự học là tự mình tìm hiểu nghiên cứu, thu nhặt các kiến thức tự luyện tập để có kỹ năng. Tự học có thể không cần sự hướng dẫn của người khác. Quá trình tự học cũng có phạm vi khá rộng :khi nghe giảng ,đọc sách hay làm bài tập , cần tích cực suy nghĩ , ghi chép , sáng tạo nhằm rút ra những điều cần thiết, hữu ích cho bản thân . Tự học cũng có nhiều hình thức: có khi là tự mày mò tìm hiểu hoặc có sự chỉ bảo, hướng dẫn của thầy cô giáo …Dù ở hình thức nào thì sự chủ động tiếp nhận tri thức của người học vẫn là quan trọng nhất bởi nó luôn giúp con người có được kiến thức vững vàng sâu sắc. Người có tinh thần tự học luôn chủ động, tự tin trong cuộc sống.

Tự học có nhiều hình thức như: Tự học ở trường, tự học ở nhà, tự học ngoài xã hội…. Nghe giảng trên lớp cũng cần có sự tích cực học tập. Không phải thầy ghi gì, giảng gì người học cứ cắm đầu ghi chép và học thuộc theo nội dung đã chép được. Khi nghe giảng, người học phải chon lọc những gì cần học ghi vào vở, thực hành nội dung cơ bản rồi mới ghi chép. Người học phải trình bày ý kiến của mình đối với những vấn đề chưa rõ, chưa hiểu với người dạy để nắm chắc kiến thức, hiểu được bản chất của kién thức.

Tự học ở nhà tức là phải tự học lại các kiến thức về lý thuyết đã được học trên lớp vận dụng lý thuyết vào làm bài tập thực hành. Tự sưu tầm thêm các bài tập nâng cao để làm.
