Tại cuộc họp thường trực Chính phủ về đề án quốc hoa Việt Nam, Thủ tướng Nguyễn Tấn Dũng đã đồng ý với đề nghị của Bộ Văn hóa, Thể thao và Du lịch về việc lựa chọn quốc hoa và giao Bộ Văn hóa chủ trì, phối hợp với các cơ quan, tổ chức có liên quan nghiên cứu, đề xuất việc tổ chức lấy ý kiến nhân dân và cách thức lựa chọn, suy tôn quốc hoa.
Trước đó, Bộ Văn hóa, Thể thao và Du lịch đã tổ chức nhiều hội nghị, hội thảo về sự cần thiết của việc lựa chọn và tôn vinh quốc hoa Việt Nam. Đồng thời, Bộ cũng tổ chức lấy ý kiến nhân dân qua hình thức bầu chọn trực tiếp quốc hoa Việt Nam ở ba miền đất nước và qua mạng Internet
