không giống như các định luật vật lí khác, ta không thể nào kiểm nghiệm được định luật quán tính một các trực tiếp bằng thực nghiệm vì trên trái đất không thể có bất kì vật nào hoàn toàn cô lập ( không chịu bất kì một lực nào). Thành thử, ta coi định luật này như một nguyên lí ( tương tự như một tiên đề trong toán học) mà không chứng minh. Ta chỉ có thể xác nhận sự đúng đắn của định luật này khi kiểm nghiệm các hẹ quả của định luật mà thôi.
