Nguồn cung thịt bò trong nước thiếu cùng với giá thành cao nên trong thời gian qua nên tình trạng nhập khẩu thịt bò diễn ra tràn lan với quy mô ngày một tăng. Trong khoảng thời gian 5 năm, từ 2010 đến 2014, giá trị nhập khẩu thịt đã tăng 113%, cán mốc 205.6 triệu đôla Mỹ vào năm 2014. Giá trị nhập khẩu thịt bò chứng kiến mức gia tăng đáng kinh ngạc gần 400%, từ 25 triệu đôla Mỹ năm 2010 lên đến 92.5 triệu đôla Mỹ năm 2014. Với mức tăng trưởng mạnh mẽ này, giá trị nhập khẩu thịt bò đã tăng lên chiếm 45% tỷ trọng thịt nhập khẩu vào Việt Nam trong năm 2014, trong khi giá trị nhập khẩu thịt gia cầm tiếp tục dẫn đầu thị trường với tỷ trọng 51%.
