Theo báo cáo thống kê của phòng CSGT, Công an thành phố Hồ Chí Minh, trong 9 tháng đầu năm 2014 (tính từ ngày 16/11/2013 đến 15/08/2014), trên địa bàn toàn thành phố đã xảy ra 595 vụ tai nạn giao thông từ ít nghiêm trọng trở lên, làm 501 người chết và 213 người bị thương. So với cùng kỳ năm 2013 giảm 100 vụ (giảm 14%), số người chết giảm 81 người (giảm 14%), số người bị thương giảm 36 người (giảm 15%). Các nguyên nhân chính gây ra tai nạn giao thông là: Lưu thông không đúng phần đường, làn đường quy định: chiếm 17,2%; vi phạm tốc độ: chiếm 11,5%; tránh, vượt không đúng quy định: chiếm 5,5%… Điều này cho thấy nguyên nhân dẫn đến tai nạn giao thông đường bộ trên địa bàn thành phố thời gian qua xuất phát chủ yếu từ người tham gia giao thông.
