- Nhằm phát đi thông điệp "con người hành động vì môi trường," Ban tổ chức Olympic 2016 đã phát cho các vận động viên tới dự lễ khai mạc mỗi người một hạt giống và một chậu đất nhỏ để họ trồng cây. Những chậu cây này sau đó sẽ được mang tới nơi được gọi là "Rừng của các vận động viên" ở Deodoro, khu vực phía Tây của Rio de Janeiro.
