Theo thống kê từ hiệp hội thép, tiêu thụ thép xây dựng năm 2013 giảm 9.43% so với 2012, đạt 4,957 triệu tấn (năm 2012 tiêu thụ 5,473 triệu tấn). Về hoạt động xuất nhập khẩu, trong năm qua Việt Nam đã nhập hơn 10 triệu tấn sắt thép các loại với giá trị khoảng 7 tỷ USD trong khi xuất khẩu chỉ đạt khoảng 2 tỷ USD. Như vậy trong nước đã nhập siêu khoảng 5 tỷ USD. Hiện nay đứng trước tình hình nhập khẩu ồ ạt các loại thép cuộn cán nguội (CRC), thép cuộn và tấm cán nóng, … có chứa nguyên tố Bo từ Trung Quốc vào Việt Nam dưới dạng các loại thép khác để hưởng thuế 0%.
