Những dấu hiệu cho thấy kinh tế Mỹ tiếp tục tăng trưởng và sức ép lạm phát giảm đã khiến Cục Dự trữ Liên bang Mỹ đã quyết định giữ nguyên lãi suất chủ chốt ở mức 5,25% ngày 31/1. Đây là cuộc họp thứ 5 liên tiếp FED đưa ra quyết định giữ nguyên lãi suất kể từ tháng 8/2006 do các dữ liệu của chính phủ cho thấy GDP của Mỹ đã tăng nhanh hơn dự đoán ở mức 3,5% trong quý IV/2006, chủ yếu nhờ tiết kiệm chi tiêu, giá xăng dầu giảm và tiền lương tăng. Như vậy trong cả năm 2006, kinh tế Mỹ đã tăng trưởng 3,4%, cao hơn 0,2% so với năm 2005 và là mức tăng nhanh nhất kể từ năm 2004. Nhiều nhà phân tích đã phải chuyển dự đoán FED sẽ cắt giảm ba lần lãi suất trong năm 2007 sang việc FED sẽ giữ nguyên lãi suất trong một giai đoạn nhất định.
