Lake Huron, to the West by the State of Michigan, United States, and to the East by the province of Ontario, Canada, is one of the five Great Lakes of North America. The name of the Lake comes from the French explorers who named it based on the Huron peoples living in the area. Lake Huron is located on the border of the United States and Canada.Lake Huron (44.8° N, 82.4° W) is the second largest lake in the Great Lakes, with a surface area of 23010 square miles (59596 km ²) — roughly the size of the u.s. State of West Virginia, the third-largest freshwater lake on Earth (4th largest lake if the Caspian Sea surface water lake are counted). It contains 850 cubic miles (3540 km ³) water, and has a shoreline length 3827 MI (6157).Present Lake Huron 577 feet (176 m) height above sea level. The Lake's average depth is 195 feet (59 m), while the maximum depth is 750 feet (229 m). It has a length of 206 miles (332 km) and a width of 183 miles (245 km).The big cities on the Lake have: Bay City, Michigan; Alpena, Michigan; Cheboygan, Michigan; St. Ignace, Michigan; Port Huron, Michigan; Goderich, Ontario; and Sarnia, Ontario.A highlight of the Lake is Manitoulin Island, dividing the North Channel and Georgian Bay from Lake Huron's main water masses. It is the largest freshwater island in the world.
