Hệ thống giáo dục quốc dân của việt nam hiện nay bao gồm: giáo dục mầm non có nhà trẻ và mẫu giáo, giáo dục phổ thông có hai bậc học là tiểu học và bậc trung học, bậc trung học có hai cấp học là cấp trung học cơ sở và trung học phổ thông; giáo dục nghề có trung học chuyên nghiệp và dạy nghề; giáo dục đại học.

Việt nam là một trong những nước có tỷ lệ mù chữ lớn nhất thế giới. các loại hình đào tạo đã đưuọc đa dạng hóa với các hệ đào tạo chính quy, tại chức, từ xa để đáp ứng nhu cầu ngày càng tăng cao của người học cũng như của toàn xã hội. Hơn nữa ngày càng nhiều sinh viên Việt Nam được cử ra nước ngoài học tập.

Nội dung chương trình, phương pháp giảng dạy đã được cải tiến để có thể đào tạo ra những sinh viên có đủ trình độ đáp ứng được yêu cầu của nền kinh tế thị trường. Các trường dạy nghề ngắn hạn và dài hạn đã được mở cho các học sinh tốt nghiệp trung học phổ thông chuẩn bị bước vào thị trường lao động.

Trình độ đội ngũ giáo viên còn thấp, không đáp ứng nổi nhu cầu cao của sự phát triển kinh tế ngày nay. Giáo viên được trả lương thấp, dẫn đến tình trạng giáo viên bỏ nghề hoặc dạy thêm vì mục đích kinh tế làm cho nhà trường nói chung và nhà giáo nói riêng ngày càng giảm uy tín trước mắt mọi người.
