Các đảo ở vịnh Hạ Long có hai dạng là đảo đá vôi và đảo phiến thạch, tập trung ở hai vùng chính là vùng phía Đông Nam Vịnh Bái Tử Long và vùng phía Tây Nam vịnh Hạ Long. Bên cạnh các đảo được đặt tên căn cứ vào hình dáng, là các đảo đặt tên theo sự tích dân gian (núi Bài Thơ, hang Trinh Nữ, đảo Tuần Châu), hoặc căn cứ vào các đặc sản có trên đảo hay vùng biển quanh đảo (hòn Ngọc Vừng, hòn Kiến Vàng, đảo Khỉ v.v.).
