Sách là ông thầy, là người bạn vô cùng thân thiết đối với những người hiếu học xưa nay. Biết yêu sách và ham mê đọc sách là một đức tính quý báu cần được rèn luyện và sớm hình thành từ tuổi ấu thơ. Khẳng định giá trị và lợi ích to lớn của sách, văn hào Go-rơ-ki có nói:
"Phải yêu sách, nó là nguồn kiến thức, chỉ có kiến thức mới là con đường sống".
Sách là một trong nhũng thành tựu văn minh kì diệu của con người. Từ những quyển sách được viết trên hàng trăm tấm da cừu, được khắc trên hàng nghìn thẻ tre, được in bằng mộc bản đến những cuốn sách in bằng máy in hiện đại như ngày nay, ta dễ dàng nhận thấy sự tiến bộ của loài người qua mấy nghìn năm lịch sử. Tác giả bài "Phương pháp đọc nhanh" (Lịch sử văn hóa tổng hợp 1987-1990) cho biết: "Tính đến nay, trong 500 năm lịch sử của mình, ngành in thế giới đã xuất bản hơn 300 triệu đầu sách, hàng năm cho ra đời 600 triệu trang in". Sách là sản phẩm tinh thần của những tài năng. Những nhà văn, những sử gia, những nhà tư tưởng vĩ đại mới có thể sáng tạo nên những tác phám vĩ đại. Kinh Thánh, Kinh Ko-ran, Kinh Phật, cuốn sử thi Ra-ma-ya-na, sách của Khổng Tử, Mạnh Tử, Lão Tử,...trải qua mấy nghìn năm, đến nay vẫn còn chiếm lĩnh tâm hồn hàng triệu con người trên trái đất. Những tác phẩm như "Sử kí Tư Mã Thiên", "Chiến tranh và Hòa bình", những bộ tiểu thuyết chương hồi như "Tam quốc chí", "Đông Chu liệt quốc",... những công trình của các nhà văn hóa, khoa học được giải thưởng Nô-ben mãi mãi chiếu sáng nền văn minh nhân loại. Hàng ngàn quyển sách Hán - Nôm được tổ tiên ông cha ta để lại là những chứng tích hùng hồn của nền văn hiến Đại Việt rực rỡ, lâu đời. Mọi thứ vật chất có thể mục nát theo thời gian, nhưng tên tuổi và các công trình của Nguyễn Trãi, Nguyễn Du, của Niu-tơn, Anh-xtanh,... sẽ đời đời bất tử.
Sông sâu, nước lớn là do tự nguồn. Sách cũng vậy. Sách là kết tinh trí tuệ của con người. Là nguồn kiến thức bao la và mênh mông. Sách nâng cao kiến thức, mở rộng tầm mắt cho độc giả, dạy ta biết yêu, biết ghét, biết mơ ước,... Còn có loại sách để đọc giải trí, nuôi dưỡng trí tưởng tượng, đem lại niềm vui. Sách là tài liệu để học tập, để tu dưỡng. Cho nên "phải biết yêu sách, biết quý sách" vì "nó là nguồn kiến thức". Người xưa đã nói: "Mỗi quyển sách là một hũ vàng". Lê Quý Đôn, nhà bác học của nước ta trong thế kỉ XVIII là một con người rất thông minh, suốt đời “mắt không rời sách, gối đầu lên sách". Con người có hiếu học mới yêu sách đến thế!
Ở đời, ai cũng muốn giàu có, sang trọng. Ai cũng muốn học rộng, biết nhiều. Nghèo khổ thì bị người ta coi thường. Dốt nát càng bị thiên hạ coi khinh. Tại sao trong xã hội phong kiến Việt Nam, sĩ lại đứng đầu các đẳng cấp: “Sĩ, nông, công, thương"? Nhân tài là nguyên khí quốc gia. Muốn biết thêm một, hai ngoại ngữ làm công cụ, muốn có một trình độ khoa học hiện đại, tiên tiến thì phải được đào tạo chuyên sâu, phải dày công học tập, phải biết tự học, tự đọc sách. Và bao giờ cũng vậy: "Rễ của học tập thì đắng; quả của học tập thì ngọt".
