Masonry Inspection
Checklist
12.1 GENERAL
Any effective quality control program that includes
inspection must include the necessary reporting to document
the program. The following guidelines are given to assist the
designer, contractor and inspector on items for consideration in
the program.
Many items on this may not apply to a particular project,
and there may be items on a project that are not included on this
list. These should be considered in addition to this generic
guide. Italics paragraphs following the items elaborate and
clarify items on the list.
12.2 INSPECTOR'S CHECKLIST
12.2.1 PRE-CONSTRUCTION VERIFICATION
1. Check the following points against the plans:.............
(a) Approved plans......................................................
(b) Approved specifications........................................
(c) Change Orders and Requests for Information......
(d) Are deviations allowed by the plan check
engineer?...............................................................
(e) Is continuous inspection necessary?.....................
(f) What are the project testing requirements?..........
(g) Names of Contractors and Suppliers....................
(h) Review of submittals............................................
2. Are pre-construction prism specimens required?........
3. Were pre-construction prism specimens made?...........
Prior to starting construction, the involved parties,
including the masonry inspector, must become familiar with the
project. This activity includes becoming familiar with the
approved plans and the special conditions relating to the
project. The inspector should be aware of any special material
requirements, such as high strength masonry units and design
mix of masonry grout.
12.2.2 START UP OBSERVATIONS
4. Check materials for:....................................................
(a) Compliance with submittals..................................
(b) Site storage to avoid contamination......................
(c) Protection from weather........................................
(d) Consistency...........................................................
Knowing what materials are required and the proper
handling methods will assist the mason and the inspector in the
quality control associated with the project.
5. Check sample panels for:.............................................
(a) Material conformance...........................................
(b) Workmanship........................................................
(c) Conformance to plan details.................................
(d) Observation at proper distance for acceptance.....
The material standard associated with concrete block
construction is ASTM C 90 which requires observation at a
distance of 20 feet under diffused lighting. This acceptance
requirement also applies to sample panels and installed work.
12.2.3 PRE-PLACEMENT OBSERVATIONS
12.2.3.1 Materials
6. Check the type and quality of CMU used....................
7. Check Concrete Masonry Units for:............................
(a) Overall conformance to applicable material
standard.................................................................
(b) Correct size and type (ASTM C 90).....................
(c) Curing (ASTM C 90)...........................................
(d) Cleanliness............................................................
(e) Soundness (ASTM C 90)......................................
8. Check quality of the units by test specimens and
determine:....................................................................
(a) Is a laboratory test required?.................................
(b) Are any special inspection provisions required?...
9. Check unit test requirement, if applicable (Unit
Strength verification, f’m)............................................
10. Check structure compliance with plans and check:.....
(a) Strength of masonry..............................................
(b) Stress.....................................................................
Most concrete block manufacturers have very high internal
quality control standards to assure that their product exceeds
the requirements set forth in the applicable material standard,
typically ASTM C 90. The inspector’s observation should
include verification of any special conditions, such as the
requirement for high strength units. Another example of the
material verification would be a visual check that the correct
color and texture unit is supplied for the project.
12.2.3.2 Project Conditions
11. Check for separation between buildings......................
12. Check thickness of walls.............................................
13. Check the size of bond beams......................................
14. Check reinforcing steel for:.........................................
(a) Kind and grade......................................................
(b) Size.......................................................................
(c) Location and spacing............................................
(d) Bracing..................................................................
(e) Clearances.............................................................
(f) Deformation................................................... ......
(g) Additional steel requirements around openings....
(h) Placement within allowable tolerances.................
Some might consider site conditions beyond the scope of
the masonry inspector, however, if the inspector has the insight
that coordination or construction issues with another trade can
create a problem, then it is diligent for the inspector to open a
dialogue to resolve the issue before it becomes a problem.
15. Check the following points for connections................
(a) Size and location of joist anchors..........................
(b) Size, location and number of bolts........................
(c) Size and location of dowels...................................
(d) Location of stirrups...............................................
(e) Veneer ties (if applicable).....................................
16. Check the placement of headers and lintels of
material other than masonry........................................
12.2.4 WORKMANSHIP
12.2.4.1 Mortar Mixing Observation
17. Check to see that clean water is used...........................
18. Check mortar compliance by type and use..................
19. Are the materials clean and covered?..........................
20. Are the manufacturers mixing specifications
followed?.....................................................................
21. Check sand for:............................................................
(a) Cleanliness............................................................
(b) Quality and fineness..............................................
(c) Aggregate compliance (ASTM C 144).................
22. Verify that cement meets specified standard................
23. Verify proportions of the mortar mix and time of
mixing.........................................................................
24. Is a container of known quantity being used
instead of shovel measurement?..................................
25. Is the correct type of mixer being used?......................
26. Is mixer operating properly?........................................
27. Is the same operator mixing every batch?....................
28. Is batch or mortar used within correct time limits?......
29. Check lime for conformance to applicable
standard.......................................................................
30. Check plasticizing agents for conformance to
material standards........................................................
31. Verify that admixtures conform to the following
requirements:...............................................................
(a) Have been approved..............................................
(b) Are properly proportioned....................................
(c) Are not used with plastic cement..........................
32. Check the consistency of mortar..................................
33. Verify that mortar is properly handled in mixing.........
34. See that mortar is not excessively retempered.............
35. Were samples taken for testing?..................................
36. Are mortar samples required?......................................
37. Were mortar samples taken, if required?.....................
Mortar can be mixed from the components at the project
site, or it can be factory blended and shipped to the project in
sacks or silos. For factory-blended mortar, the manufacturers
recommendations should be followed. Field mixed mortar is
done in accordance with the time provisions in the code.
Mortar should be mixed in a paddle type mixer and kept
workable for the mason. Occasionally, mortar samples are
required for testing. Mortar samples should be spread over a
masonry unit for a period of one minute to replicate initial
hydration of the mortar before it is put into a cylinder. The
standard for preparing mortar samples is very detailed in the
test preparation procedure. When masonry prisms are
constructed, the mortar is tested as part of the prism; therefore
individual mortar samples are unnecessary.
12.2.4.2 Grout Observations
38. Check grout for:...........................................................
(a) Design mix or proportions....................................
(b) Consistency (Slump).............................................
(c) Compressive strength............................................
(d) Handling...............................................................
(e) Non-Segregation...................................................
(f) Is grout being placed in units as specified?...........
(g) Placement method, high lift or low lift..................
(h) Proper consolidation.............................................
39. Are grout samples required?........................................
40. Were grout samples taken, if required?.............
