HIV gây ra do nhiễm virus suy giảm miễn dịch ở người. Trong thời gian đầu người bệnh thường có triệu chứng cúm trong một thời gian ngắn, sau đó , người bệnh không có dấu hiệu bệnh trong một thời gian dài. Khi bệnh tiến triển, ảnh hưởng ngày càng nhiều đến hệ miễn dịch làm cho cơ thể dễ mắc phải các bệnh nhiễm trùng.
