Hiện nay, toàn tỉnh có 24.170 hộ nghèo, chiếm tỉ lệ 6,48% (hộ nghèo ở thành thị 1.382 hộ, chiếm 3,72%; hộ nghèo ở nông thôn 22.788 hộ, chiếm 6,78%). Nguyên nhân cơ bản của nghèo hiện nay là do thiếu vốn và phương tiện sản xuất (8.573 hộ); thiếu lao động và người ăn theo (3.333 hộ); thiếu việc làm và tay nghề (1.685 hộ); thiếu kiến thức, không biết làm ăn, phân công lao động chưa hợp lý (733 hộ); thiếu đất canh tác (2.679 hộ); ốm đau bệnh tật (6.301 hộ); chây lười lao động, tệ nạn xã hội (247 hộ) (nguồn: Sở tư pháp tỉnh Bến Tre, 19/3/2015).
