Thời Bắc thuộc, Nho giáo chưa có chỗ đứng trong xã hội Việt Nam, đến năm 1070 Lý Thái Tổ lập Văn Miếu thờ Chu Công-Khổng Tử mới có thể xem là được tiếp nhận chính thức. Thế kỉ 15, do nhu cầu xây dựng đất nước thống nhất, chính quyền tập trung, xã hội trật tự, Nho giáo thay chân Phật giáo trở thành quốc giáo dưới triều Lê.
Nho giáo, chủ yếu là Tống Nho, bám chắc vào cơ chế chính trị-xã hội, vào chế độ học hành khoa cử, vào tầng lớp nho sĩ, dần chiếm lĩnh đời sống tinh thần xã hội. Nhưng Nho giáo cũng chỉ được tiếp thụ ở Việt Nam từng yếu tố riêng lẻ - nhất là về chính trị-đạo đức, chứ không bê nguyên xi cả hệ thống.
