Theo thống kê của Nielsen tại Việt Nam, số người sử dụng vào việc mở mang kiến thức, nâng cao trình độ học tập và nâng cao chất lượng công việc khoảng 47%. Số người sử dụng chơi game, Chat… chiếm 53%.

Một số hacker đã viết những đoạn chương trình phá hoại mà ta thường gọi với tên virus, trojan, spyware,… có thể ăn cắp dữ liệu, làm rò rỉ thông tin, nhất là tài khoản của khách hàng ở các ngân hàng, gây tổn thất lớn cho các công ty, doanh nghiệp.

Theo giáo sư Jerald Block của ĐH Khoa học và y tế Oregon, bốn triệu chứng nghiện Internet chính là: quên thời gian, sao lãng ăn uống và ngủ; tức giận, căng thẳng, bồn chồn khi không thể lên mạng; cần trang bị máy tính mạnh hơn, nhiều phần mềm mới; biểu hiện trầm cảm, hay cáu giận và tách biệt với xã hội.
