Việt Nam là một quốc gia có diện tích đất ngập nước rất lớn thuận lợi cho nuôi trồng thủy sản. Trong những năm qua, nuôi trồng thủy sản Việt Nam phát triển mạnh mẽ, thu được những thành tựu to lớn, góp phần giảm nghèo, tạo thu nhập và việc làm cho một bộ phận lao động, đóng góp tích cực cho kinh tế nông nghiệp nói riêng và kinh tế đất nước nói chung. Bên cạnh đó, việc khai thác quá mức nguồn lợi thủy sản, tăng diện tích nuôi trồng thủy sản, thiếu quy hoạch, sử dụng bừa bãi thuốc hóa chất, chế phẩm sinh học... làm cho ô nhiễm môi trường nước ngày càng nghiêm trọng. Như vậy để tìm ra giải pháp xử lý ô nhiễm môi trường, xử lý nước thải của ngành thủy sản đang là một vấn đề mang tính thời sự, rất cấp bách.
