Thoran Rodrigues made a thorough comparison of 11 cloud IaaS providers based on criteria the same group. See how the big players in the state than his goal.
Cloud computing is a term that covers a lot of different things. From servers and infrastructure with office software, a lot of current IT models sold on a cloud-based service ,. This means that any comparison of providers of cloud computing can not only very complex, but it can also end up companies that do not even compete with each measurement. To avoid this situation, the different types of cloud computing services should be considered separately. Today, we will focus on infrastructure as a service (IaaS). IaaS providers are companies that provide the most basic needs of IT - servers, networks and storage - on a scale use image-based payments. They often make large investments in data centers and other infrastructure, and then rent it out, allowing consumers to avoid their own investments. Even the vendors, however, not all pursue the same business model. While the largest and most famous is the focus on the public, complete with automatic network set-up, also some players that serve only suitable for the enterprise market, as well as companies smaller resell infrastructure from larger ones, usually with some value-added services. the company compares the sake of this comparison, we will focus on IaaS providers which services can be purchased directly online, without contact with the salesman of any kind. They were selected based on my knowledge of both companies in this field, and based on the availability of information about them on the web. I ended up with 11 different companies, from, big newcomers and well-known smaller. To do the comparison, I decided to create a number of dimensions that tries to reflect aspects importance of cloud computing, such as the promise of lower costs and economies of scale, the level of service provided to customers, flexibility in configuring the server, and concerns users such as security, compliance, and support. This process resulted in the following 14 criteria: Price Plan - Supplier offers pay-as-you-go (often hours) plans, monthly price plans, "member" discount (in which users receive a discount at the rate used in exchange for an additional annual payment), or any combination thereof. The more options offered, the better, but the pay-as-you-go is independently selected the most interesting, as it allows to control the use of finer particles. Only payment plan prominently displayed were reviewed. Monthly average price - estimated cost US $ 1 for a CPU, 2GB of RAM cloud server (or nearest best choice), medium average across the data center for companies with pricing based on the location, and the average server on Windows / Linux. When available, the price is now used, based on 730 hours monthly. Otherwise, the monthly price was used. Do not include data transmission charges. Service Level Agreement (SLA) - Uptime SLA provided (regardless of past performance), in percentage points. The data center - The number of data center is offered as a choice when deploying cloud servers. Certifications - If the supplier has access relative and relevant security certificates, such as PCI or SAS 70. scale up - If possible scaling cloud server instances individuals by adding more memory, more CPU or more storage space. scale Out - If you can quickly deploy the machine case new owners. Support - A subjective scale of three levels: Poor - the company only offers free online forum; other support to pay Average - the company provides a unique free 24x7 support (or phone-based or online chat), in addition to the forums Expansion - Companies with multiple services support is included in the base price monitoring - A subjective scale of three levels: Poor - the company has no supervisory / solutions integrated warning, requiring the deployment of third-party tools or add services are purchased Medium - companies with integrated monitoring tool is very simple (some index or no warning) Expansion - companies with the monitoring tool is fully integrated supply no additional cost for API - If the company provides APIs for interacting with the server or not. free Tier - If providers have a "free trial" class customers can use to inspection services. operating system support - the number of supported operating systems, regardless of version, available as a pre-configured image.
