Không nằm ngoài xu hướng phát triển của đô thị thế giới, trong những năm gần đây, diện tích đô thị của thành phố Đà Nẵng liên tục mở rộng với tốc độ đô thị hóa cao, diện mạo đô thị ngày một khang trang với hệ thống kết cấu hạ tầng kỹ thuật và cơ sở hạ tầng xã hội được đầu tư cả về số lượng lẫn chất lượng, đem lại cho Đà Nẵng một tầm vóc mới cả về không gian lẫn chất lượng đô thị.

Tuy nhiên, cùng với sự phát triển đô thị, Đà Nẵng đang đối mặt với khá nhiều thách thức để có thể trở thành một đô thị hiện đại, phát triển bền vững như: thiếu mảng kiến trúc xanh trong đô thị; vấn đề xử lý nước thải công nghiệp, nước thải sinh hoạt, chất thải rắn,…

Quá trình đô thị hóa nhanh chóng và gia tăng dân số của Đà Nẵng những năm gần đây đã gây nên tác động xấu đến môi trường đất, nước, không khí. Trung bình mỗi ngày, ước tính khoảng 324 tấn rác thải được thu gom tại các thùng rác đặt trên đường phố, chiếm 49,6% lượng rác thu gom được. Rác thải được công nhân vệ sinh thu gom trực tiếp tại các kiệt hẽm bằng xe ba gác chiếm khoảng 43% tổng lượng rác thải thu gom trên địa bàn thành phố.
