hiên nay nhu cầu du lịch của du khách ngày càng tăng thì để đáp ứng những nhu cầu đa dạng của du khách thì các loại hình du lịch cũng lần lượt ra đời. Trong các loại hình đó thì loại hình du lịch homestay là loại hình du lịch đang nhận được rất nhiều sự quan tâm của các cơ quan quản lý, các công ty, du khách mong tìm hiểu đất nước con người nơi mà họ đến.
Theo thông tư 88/2008/TT-BVHTTDL của luật du lịch Việt Nam: nhà ở có phòng cho khách du lịch thuê ( homestay) là nơi sinh sống của người sở hửu hay là người sử dụng hợp pháp trong thời gian cho thuê lưu trú du lịch, có trang thiết bị tiện nghi cho khách du lịch thuê, lưu trú và đồng thời có thể có dịch vụ khác theo khả năng đáp ứng của chủ nhà.

Homestay là loại hình du lịch dành cho những du khách thích khám phá, trải nghiệm, và tìm hiểu phong tục, tập quán của nhiều nền văn hóa à của mọi dân tộc khác nhau tại nơi mà họ đến. Hiểu theo cách đơn giản thì “ dịch vụ lưu trú nhà dân ( homestay)” là hình thức du lịch tìm hiểu và sinh hoạt với những cư dân bản địa ngay chính trong nhà của họ. Hiểu rộng hơn, homestay là cách mà nhiều du khách lựa chọn để có cơ hội trải nghiệm cuộc sống, tìm hiểu văn hóa của từng vùng, từng miền một cách cặn kẽ nhất. Trong suốt quá trình du lịch du khách sẽ hiểu hơn về cuộc sống và con người vùng đất đó, bởi họ được “ cùng ăn, ở và cùng làm” với gia đình chủ nhà trong không khí ấm cũng và than thiện. Hơn thế nữa đây là loại hình du lịch này còn giúp khắc phục tình trạng thiếu phòng của các khách sạn trong mùa du lịch cao điểm và nó còn giúp những khách du lịch có thu nhập thấp có thể đi du lịch một cách dễ dàng.
Thông qua các lễ hội hay các hình thức du lịch sinh thái, du lịch homestay cáng có điều kiện phát triển nhanh chóng. Hơn thế nữa việc áp dụng biện pháp bảo tồn tổng thể, toàn diện ( dựa trên những quy định của chính phủ) và các tổ chức xã hội, của chính nhân dân ( với tư cách chủ thể văn hóa được hưởng lợi) thì mới có thể bảo tồn và phát huy giá trị du lịch của làng cổ. Chính người dân, cộng đồng dân cư sống trong làng có vai trò quyết định sự thành công của ngành này, và vai trò đó nhất định phải được đề cao. Ngoài ra việc kinh doanh loại hình du lịch này đã từng bước góp phần xóa đói giảm nghèo cho người dân và bảo tồn di sản, bảo vệ môi trường sinh thái, giúp du lịch phát triển bền vững.
