Những nguyên nhân gây nên ô nhiễm nguồn nước chúng ta có thể kể đến đầu tiên chính là do con người thải các loại nước thải, nước hút bể phốt và sử dụng quá nhiều thuốc bảo vệ thực vật trong sản xuất nông nghiệp.
Thường xuyên phải sử dụng phân bón hóa chất vi lượng và thuốc bảo vệ thực vật ở mức cao. Do đó, khả năng gây ô nhiễm nguồn nước từ các hóa chất có trong phân bón, thuốc bảo vệ thực vật, đều rất cao.
Ô nhiễm nước sinh học do các nguồn thải đô thị hay kỹ nghệ có các chất thải sinh hoạt, phân, nước rữa của các nhà máy.
Sự ô nhiễm bởi các hydrocarbon là do các hiện tượng khai thác mỏ dầu, vận chuyển ở biển và các chất thải bị nhiễm xăng dầu.
Ô nhiễm hoá học do chất vô cơ, sự thải vào nước các chất như nitrat, phosphat và các chất khác dùng trong nông nghiệp và các chất thải từ các ngành công nghiệp.
