Các loại đọc kể trên được sử dụng trong các hoạt đọng dạy học. Ba loại đọc đầu mang tính chất là “ Đọc rộng” ( Intensive reading ), còn hai loại đọc sau mang tính chất là đọc phân tích hay đọc sâu (Extensive reading). Phổ biến trong các chương trình dạy học là đọc phân tích, chủ yếu nhằm để cung cấp ngữ liệu và thực hành dạy tiếng nói chung. Các loại đọc tổng hợp còn hạn chế.
Để thành công trong quá trình dạy đọc, giáo viên cần giúp học sinh hiểu rõ tầm quan trọng của việc đọc: Đọc để làm gi? Đọc như thế nào? Mục đích cần đạt được sau khi đọc là gì?
