Hiện nay có 149 quốc gia và vùng lãnh thổ với hơn ¾ dân số thế giới đang cho phép sử dụng amiăng trắng và các sản phẩm chứa amiăng trắng, trong đó có các nước G8 gồm: Hoa Kỳ, Canađa, Liên bang Nga và các nước: Mexico, Brazil, , Ukraina, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Trung Quốc, Ấn Độ, Thái Lan, In đô nê xia, Việt Nam...
Nước Mỹ cấm amiăng từ những năm 1980 theo đề xuất của EPA, nhưng đến năm 1991, Tòa thượng tẩm Hoa Kỳ đã hủy bỏ lệnh cấm và lệnh loại bỏ dần dần amiăng [3]. Tòa án Tối cao Ấn độ (01.2011) đã bác bỏ yêu cầu của các Tổ chức Phi chính phủ NGO là cấm sử dụng tất cả các loại Amiang. Yêu cầu này đệ trình lên tòa án từ 2004. Các nước Singapore, Đài Loan đã từng cấm amiăng, nhưng đã rút khỏi danh sách các nước cấm từ 2010.
Nước Mỹ hiện nay cho phép sản xuất hoặc nhập khẩu để sử dụng khoảng gần 30 sản phẩm có chứa amiăng trắng là: Tấm sóng amiăng xi măng, tấm phẳng amiăng xi măng, gạch lát sàn nhựa vinyl-amiăng, ống dẫn amiăng xi măng, vật liệu ma sát (VL làm phanh các loại), vải amiăng (vải chống cháy). Nước Mỹ đang sử dụng 51 nhóm tiêu chuẩn sản phẩm, tiêu chuẩn phương pháp thử cho các sản phẩm amiăng xi măng và sợi amiăng, có những tiêu chuẩn xoát xét lần cuối vào năm 2011.
Liên bang Nga cũng đang sản xuất và sử dụng rộng rãi các loại sản phẩm từ amiăng trắng: Tấm sóng, tấm phẳng, ống cấp nước sinh hoạt và nước nóng, ống thoát nước, thoát rác, ống dẫn khí ga, vật liệu ma sát, vật liệu bảo ôn, vải chịu nhiệt, vải chống cháy [4,5]..
Nước Mỹ, Liên bang Nga sản xuất và sử dụng các sản phẩm chứa amiăng nhiều chủng loại hơn ở Việt Nam. Đối với các sản phẩm tấm lợp (tấm sóng, tấm phẳng) amiăng trắng được sử dụng làm sợi gia cường, chỉ chiếm khoảng 10 – 15%, liên kết chặt với chất kết dính (xi măng), bền vững trong quá trình sản xuất và suốt vòng đời sản phẩm không gây ô nhiễm bụi sợi.
Ngành sản xuất tấm lợp AC ở Việt Nam đã tồn tại 50 năm, từ năm 1963 đến nay và đã phát triển thành một ngành công nghiệp gồm 39 cơ sở sản xuất với công suất thiết kế hơn 106 triệu m2/năm, sử dụng hơn 5.000 lao động. Từ 2008 đến nay, mỗi năm sản xuất và tiêu thụ khoảng 80 - 90 triệu m2/năm chiếm khoảng 60 - 62% nhu cầu về tấm lợp, sử dụng bình quân 60.000 -70.000 tấn amiăng chrysotile/năm.
