Chùa Bái Đính nằm ở cửa ngõ phía Tây của khu di tích cố đô Hoa Lư, thuộc xã Gia Sinh, huyện Gia Viễn, tỉnh Ninh Bình, cách Hà Nội hơn 95km về phía Nam. Quần thể chùa Bái Đính bao gồm khu Bái Đính cổ tự (chùa Bái Đính cổ) và Bái Đính tân tự (chùa Bái Đính mới). Trong tên gọi Bái Đính, "Bái" có nghĩa là lễ bái, còn "Đính" nghĩa là đỉnh, Bái Đính có nghĩa là cúng bái trời đất, Phật thánh ở trên cao. Quần thể chùa Bái Đính được xây dựng trên vùng đất phía Tây kinh thành Hoa Lư và kề cận với cố đô Hoa Lư.
Bái Đính cổ tự nằm trên núi Đính, cao 187m, được xây dựng cách đây hơn 1000 năm. Bước qua hơn 300 bậc đá bằng phẳng xếp chồng lên nhau, qua cánh cổng tam quan lưng chừng núi là đến trung tâm chùa Bái Đính cổ. Khu chùa này quay hướng chính Tây, nằm gần trên đỉnh của một vùng rừng núi khá yên tĩnh, gồm có một nhà tiền đường ở giữa, bên phải là hang Sáng thờ Phật và thần Cao Sơn, bên trái là động Tối thờ Mẫu và Tiên. Chùa được tạo dựng theo lối kiến trúc chùa nằm trong hang động khá phổ biến ở Việt Nam. Chị Đỗ Ngọc Ánh, hướng dẫn viên du lịch, giới thiệu: "Phía trên cửa hang Sáng có 4 đại tự "Minh Đỉnh Danh Lam" khắc trên đá do vua Lê Thánh Tông ban tặng có nghĩa là “Lưu danh thơm cảnh đẹp” để ca ngợi chốn này. Nơi đây, trần hang động như là những mái chùa kiên cố, che chắn chốn thiêng ngự trị của Phật, của Mẫu. Sau khi chiêm bái, thăm Bái Đính cổ tự, du khách đi theo một lối đi nhỏ vòng qua triền núi dài chừng 1 km tới khuôn viên Bái Đính tân tự. Ngôi chùa mới tọa lạc trên triền đồi Ba Rau huyền thoại dưới chân núi Đính, ngọn núi cao nhất hùng vĩ nhất trong vùng. Phía trước chùa được các ngọn núi hùng vĩ núi quây quần ôm lấy tạo như hình chữ Tâm. Vị trí chùa cũng được đặt theo thuyết phong thủy cổ, tiền thủy hậu sơn, phía trước là hồ Đàm Thị và sông Hoàng Long. Hai dãy hành lang này có chiều dài mỗi dãy khoảng 1700m, được xây dựng tượng trưng cho con đường đến với Phật pháp của các vị La Hán. Đây được xác nhận là con đường La Hán dài nhất châu Á. Chị Đỗ Ngọc Ánh giải thích: "Tượng các vị La Hán được làm hoàn toàn bằng loại đá xanh đặc biệt, do chính bàn tay tài hoa của các nghệ nhân chạm khắc đá của Ninh Bình chế tác nên. Dưới mỗi bức tượng đều có tên của vị La Hán để mọi người được biết."
Kiến trúc công trình này được bố trí trải dài từ dưới lên trên, bắt đầu từ Tam quan ngoại, Tam quan nội, rồi đến gác Chuông, điện Quan thế âm Bồ Tát, điện đức Phật Tổ. Khu tháp Chuông nằm phía sau cổng Tam quan ngoại, cao 3 tầng, có hình bát giác. Tháp Chuông này treo quả chuông nặng 36 tấn, được xác nhận là quả chuông đồng lớn nhất Việt Nam.
