Đạo Hindu (nghĩa là tôn giáo của người Ấn) là tôn giáo cổ xưa nhất, lớn nhất của Ấn Độ. Hiện nay, Đạo Hindu thu hút hơn 80% dân số và Đạo này có mặt ở hầu khắp các bang của Ấn Độ. Hàng loạt những công trình kiến trúc nổi tiếng nhất ở Ấn Độ và Đông Nam Á như Kônarắc, Kharuiahô, Mahabalipuram, Ăngco Vát, Lôrô Jônggrang, các tháp Chăm... và nhiều tác phẩm văn học lớn của Ấn Độ như Ramayana, Mahabharata... đều ra đời trên nền tảng của Đạo Hindu.

Khác với các tôn giáo khác của thế giới như Phật giáo, Thiên chúa giáo, Hồi giáo... Đạo Hindu là một tôn giáo không có người sáng lập, không có giáo chủ, giáo điều mà chỉ là sự tổng hợp các hệ thống tôn giáo - tín ngưỡng - triết học. Hệ thống tôn giáo - tín ngưỡng - triết học đó của Đạo Hinđu được hình thành và hoàn thiện dần theo suốt chiều dài lịch sử của Ấn Độ. Lịch sử Đạo Hinđu có ba giai đoạn lớn: Giai đoạn Vệ đà, giai đoạn Bàlamôn và giai đoạn Hindu. Giai đoạn Vệ đà kéo dài từ khoảng năm 1800 đến năm 500 Tr. Ba vị Thần chủ thể đó là: Brahma, Vishnu và Shiva, đại diện cho ba lực lượng phổ biến của Vũ trụ: Sáng tạo, Bảo tồn và Phá hoại. Để dễ dàng hoà nhập vào đông đảo dân chúng, ở giai đoạn này, nhiều lễ thức của Đạo Hinđu đã được đơn giản hoá. Giờ đây, các công việc như hiến tế súc vật tốn kém được thay thế bằng thờ cúng các ảnh tượng; bên cạnh các đền thờ lớn, đã xuất hiện các đền thờ nhỏ của từng gia đình; thuyết sùng tín (Bhắc ti) chủ trương chỉ cần có lòng thành là có thể giao cảm được với Thần linh đã ra đời. Đến thế kỷ XIX và XX một số nhà hoạt động tôn giáo nổi tiếng của Ấn Độ như Ram Môhanroy, Ram Krishna, Vivơka nanđa, Ôrôbinđô... đã làm cuộc cách tân lớn đối với Đạo Hinđu. Cuộc cách tân này không chỉ phục hồi những giá trị đích thực ban đầu của Đạo Hinđu mà còn loại trừ những yếu tố lạc hậu và thái quá ra khỏi tư tưởng của Đạo này.
