Việt Nam đã luôn công nhận tầm quan trọng của việc tăng cường tình hữu nghị cũng như sự hợp tác với Nhật Bản và chuyển hướng tới mối quan hệ hợp tác chiến lược với nền hòa bình và thịnh vượng được đẩy mạnh về sau ở Châu Á.
Chủ tịch nước Nguyễn Minh Triết đã đưa ra khẳng định trên trong khi tiếp cựu Thủ tướng Nhật Bản Ýasuo Fukuda tại Hà Nội vào ngày 15 tháng 12, người đã tham gia vào diễn đàn Châu Á của những người trong nghị viện về dân số và phát triển ở Việt Nam.
Chủ tịch nước Nguyễn Minh Triết nhấn mạnh rằng những đóng góp của cựu Thủ tướng Nhật Bản để tăng cường mối quan hệ Việt-Nhật đã phát triển một cách vững chắc hơn trong những năm gần đây.
Chủ tịch nói rằng Chính phủ và nhân dân Việt Nam đánh giá cao sự hỗ trợ của chính phủ và nhân dân Nhật Bản trong suốt tiến trình đổi mới, phát triển đất nước và hội nhập quốc tế vừa qua.
Nhấn mạnh sự hài lòng của mình về sự phát triển mối quan hệ giữa hai đất nước, cựu Thủ tướng Fukuda nói rằng ông hy vọng hai nước sẽ đẩy mạnh giao lưu nhằm tăng thêm sự hiểu biết lẫn nhau.
