Cúc Phương là một trong những điểm đa dạng nhất về khu hệ chim ở miền Bắc Việt Nam, với 308 loài đã được phát hiện và thống kê, trong đó có nhiều loài quý hiếm như: Gõ kiến đầu đỏ, Gà lôi trắng, Niệc nâu, Đuôi cụt bụng vằn…, đặc biệt có nhiều là loài đặc hữu của Việt Nam và Đông Dương. Vì vậy, Cúc Phương đã trở thành một địa điểm không thể bỏ qua đối với các nhà khoa học và các nhà xem chim. Thời điểm tốt nhất để xem chim là buổi sáng sớm và chiều tối.
